Carved Calacatta marble with gold leaf as the recessed”veil” of the backdrop. 4 wounds to the gold leaf veil represent the 4 shots fired by the assasin that wounded Pope John Paul II on May 13,1981 in St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City. As that day was the feast of Our Lady of Fatima, it is believed that the assassination attempt failed due to Our Lady’s intervention. This was the inspiration for the design. Hidden internal illumination serve to highlight the relic and heighten the personal experience of the visit.
